Hyaluronic acid shows up on almost every "hydrating" label, but the molecule on the ingredient list is not one single thing. It's a whole family of sizes, and size is exactly what decides what it does on your skin.

High molecular weight: the surface film

Large HA molecules (over 1,000 kDa) are too big to get past the stratum corneum. They sit on top of the skin and form a thin film that holds water at the surface — great for that instant plump, dewy look, but it doesn't go anywhere deeper.

Low molecular weight: the deeper penetrator

Smaller fragments (under 50 kDa) can slip into the upper layers of the epidermis. This is where things get interesting: some research suggests very low molecular weight HA fragments can trigger inflammatory signaling, which is the opposite of what you want from a "soothing" hydrator.

The sweet spot for most skin types is a blend of molecular weights — a mix gives you both the surface hydration and a bit of deeper humectant action without overdoing the inflammatory risk.

What to actually look for

Brands rarely disclose molecular weight on the label, which is frustrating from a formulation standpoint. If a product lists "sodium hyaluronate" with no further detail, assume it's a single weight — usually higher, since it's cheaper to produce. Multi-weight HA serums will usually say so explicitly, sometimes listing two or three different sodium hyaluronate entries.

Bottom line: hyaluronic acid isn't a marketing buzzword you can treat as one ingredient. It's a spectrum, and the spectrum matters more than the percentage on the bottle.
