Your skin's surface is naturally acidic, sitting around pH 4.5 to 5.5. Chemists call this the "acid mantle," and it's not decoration — it's an active defense system.
Why acidic matters
At that pH range, the enzymes responsible for shedding dead skin cells (proteases like kallikreins) work properly, your skin barrier lipids stay organized, and the bacteria that should live on your skin can outcompete the ones that shouldn't.
What happens at pH 9
Traditional bar soap sits around pH 9–10. Wash with it daily and you temporarily strip the acid mantle, which:
- Disrupts the lipid organization that keeps water in and irritants out
- Slows down the enzymes that regulate healthy cell turnover
- Creates a more hospitable environment for less friendly bacteria
Your skin can buffer back to its normal pH within an hour or two, but doing this twice a day, every day, adds up to chronic barrier stress — which shows up as sensitivity, dryness, and a compromised barrier over time.
The fix is simpler than you think
You don't need a pH meter. Just look for cleansers labeled "pH-balanced" or "low-pH," and if you can, avoid anything that leaves your skin feeling tight and squeaky right after rinsing — that tightness is your barrier telling you something just got stripped.
