"Retinoid" is the umbrella term for the whole vitamin A family. Every form has to convert into retinoic acid before your skin can actually use it — the question is how many conversion steps it needs to get there.

The conversion chain

Retinyl esters → Retinol → Retinaldehyde (retinal) → Retinoic acid

Each arrow is a step your skin's enzymes have to perform, and each step loses some potency along the way. That means:

  • Retinyl esters (palmitate, etc.) are the gentlest and the weakest — three conversion steps away from active.
  • Retinol is the classic over-the-counter option — two steps away, well studied, the default "starter" retinoid.
  • Retinal (retinaldehyde) is one step closer to active than retinol, and some research suggests it has direct antimicrobial action of its own, independent of the conversion.
  • Retinoic acid (tretinoin) is the active form itself — no conversion needed, which is why it's also the most irritating and typically prescription-only.

So which one is "worth it"

If your skin tolerates it, retinaldehyde tends to hit a nice middle ground: faster results than retinol, less irritation than prescription tretinoin. But "worth it" really depends on your barrier health going in — a stronger retinoid on a compromised barrier will just cause more irritation, not faster results.
